Councillors vote in favour of giving €500,000 in grants to Cork city sports clubs

Cork city councillors have voted in favour of providing more than €500,000 in sports grants to clubs situated across the city.

A total of €523,788.64 will be distributed between more than 120 clubs, with individual amounts ranging from €362 to €7,800.

The total sum includes an additional €20,538.43, which is noted as “unused grants and overpayments from previous years”.

Funding was granted across a wide range of sports and recreational walking initiatives including pitch maintenance or upgrades, gym or training equipment, lighting improvements or floodlights, changing room upgrades, scoreboards and dugouts, ride-on lawnmowers and other maintenance equipment, court or facility renovation, storage sheds and containers, or security fencing.

Independent Ireland councillor Noel O’Flynn welcomed the grant allocations.

“This is not just welcome — it’s essential,” Mr O’Flynn said.

“It’s a direct investment in the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of our communities, and a vote of confidence in the people who make grassroots sport happen.

“Across Cork’s northside, clubs have long been delivering exceptional results with limited resources. These grants will empower them to expand their reach, more young people, and deepen their impact at the very heart of our neighbourhoods.

“From Chicago to Glasgow, we’ve seen how public investment in sport reduces youth crime, improves mental health, and builds real social cohesion. Cork is no exception.

“We are already seeing those benefits through the tireless work of our local volunteers.”
