Looking for your dream home in Cork? ADRIENNE ACTON assesses gorgeous properties currently on the market in Kinsale, Cobh, and Midleton.
Property: 3 period homes in Cork for under €1m

Ballynona House is a gothic-style gem whose dining room measures 75ft x 54ft. See No.2.

Spring is traditionally a busy time in the housing market, and there are currently a choice of beautiful period homes available in Cork.

Whether Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian, these properties offer style, garden space, and large rooms with an abundance of light filtering through magnificent windows. An air of luxury for the discerning buyer.

Here, I focus on three such properties on sale in the county for between €950,000 and €995,000.

1. 2, The Bowling Green, St John’s Hill, Kinsale, €995,000

Our first house is a Georgian beauty overlooking the harbour in Kinsale.

Priced at €995,000, this townhouse offers five bedrooms and three bathrooms spread our over four floors and covering an area of 241 square metres.

The house has been renovated to incorporate all the requirements for modern living, but the owners have sympathetically retained what makes this home so special.

The Stanley range in the kitchen is a nod to the past, while the downstairs bathroom and office are a nod to the needs of the modern family, and the views are of course timeless.

2, Bowling Green, Kinsale, is a Georgian beauty overlooking the harbour, once the home of a famous rock star.

The patio doors from the kitchen lead to a stunning patio with views over the harbour. The high ceilings and muted tones reflect light around all of the rooms.

Whether it’s the bedrooms or the reception rooms, everywhere benefits from the location and vista.

The house is located near the top of St John’s Hill, but when you go through the gates beyond, where you can park your car, you can enjoy the surrounds of the Bowling Green, an old-style park where the regimental orchestral bands from the barracks and forts would have played on sunny evenings to entertain locals and visitors alike.

To this day, it is still a beautiful park. There is a pathway through here to the town below.

But, if you prefer more modern music, you may be interested to know that a previous owner was a certain Mr Andy Summers, guitarist with a band called The Police!

This townhouse encomes the best of Kinsale views, with modern living and old-world charm. And as an added bonus there is a very impressive BER of C3.

2. Ballynona House, Ballynona South, Midleton, €950,000

Our second property is a Gothic masterpiece. An eight-bedroom and five-bathroom period home, it is set on half an acre of land not far from Midleton.

This home almost looks out of place with its extraordinary architecture. The original property was lost to fire and this beauty was built around 1900 as the replacement.

With its verandas, cast iron cornices, bay windows and pyramid pitch roofs, it is a strikingly beautiful home, offering panoramic views of the countryside.

The downstairs incorporates a lobby, kitchen and dining room, utility room and bathroom, a freezer room, large hall, reception room and second reception room, and a dining room that measures no less than 75ft x 54ft!

The first floor has five bedrooms while the second-floor houses three more.

The kitchen is stunning, and the colour scheme in some of the rooms is highly individual. This property has an impressive BER of D2.

3. Knockeven House, Rushbrooke, Cobh, €950,000

Our third property is on the market with Savills and sits only 1.2 miles from the centre of Cobh town, and just a six-minute walk to the railway station.

Knockeven House, a six-bedroom and seven-bathroom substantial home, was run as a very successful five-star bed and breakfast by the Mulhaire family and is now on the market and ripe with opportunity.

Knockeven House in Rushbrooke, Cobh, could continue to run as a bed and breakfast, or become a family home.

There is the option of continuing the business, keeping it as a family home, or maybe renting out rooms for the summer months close to the vibrant town of Cobh.

Built in or around 1850, the three- bay two-storey home with its bay windows fits in beautifully with the other Victorian facades dotted around the town of Cobh.

The remnants of when the town was called Queenstown are evident in its architecture.

This home has been lovingly maintained and the period features retained. There are limestone steps to the front, with a fanlight design over the main entrance and period tiles underfoot. The word to describe this home has to be ‘elegant’.

The colour pallet is warm, the fires inviting, and the décor luxurious. Marble fireplaces and large windows are homely while the kitchen is modern. Just look at the sweeping staircase, huge rooms and detailed cornices!
