An information evening on the Cork County Council’s Beach Lifeguard Service is being held at UCC tomorrow at 2pm.

The event is being held in Áras na Laoi G18 to discuss the service and how to apply for an office of sand and sea next summer on one of the County’s 13 beaches.

Cork County Council is to begin recruiting for its Beach Lifeguard Service in the new year.

The job description outlines that beachguards are the first line of defence. “They keep people safe in and around water by providing practical safety advice to prevent incidents happening, and by rescuing those who do get into trouble.”

The annual beach lifeguard service runs from June to mid-September every year, operating during the weekends in June and September and full time during the months of July and August. The lifeguard service work closely with other organisations including Cork Water Safety, the RNLI, and the Irish Coast Guard.

In 2018, the busiest season to date, Cork Lifeguards used their top-class training to rescue 33 people, reunite 22 children with their families, provide first aid treatment to 670 people, and prevented over 7,500 more accidents from happening.

To find out more about this challenging, rewarding and exciting job, come along to UCC tomorrow to Áras na Laoi G18 at 2pm.
