CONCERNS have been raised about the ongoing issue of discoloured water in Cork city, which has forced some people to pay significant amounts for bottled water.
Socialist Party councillor for the North-West ward Brian McCarthy said discoloured water is still a major issue after more than 18 months, particularly on the northside of the city.
“People have real and understandable concerns about the safety of their water,” he said. “Many are being forced to pay significant amounts for bottled water because they are afraid for their health and their children’s health. This is also affecting appliances, with many residents stating they’ve had to replace kettles, washing machines, and showers, all ruined by the discoloured water.
“There’s a cost-of-living crisis as it is, without this on top of it. Ten years ago we fought tooth and nail against the introduction of water charges and we won an important victory, but look at what’s happening now.”
Mr McCarthy said that people feel “completely abandoned” by Uisce Éireann who he said “are refusing to seriously engage with households and communities affected”.
