A NUMBER of ‘nonfire’ events will take place across the city this evening aimed at families looking to mark the traditional ‘bonna night’.
June 23 marks St John's Eve, a night traditionally associated with bonfires.
Speaking to The Echo ahead of the celebrations, community team social inclusion specialist with Cork City Council, Martha Halbert said: “St John’s Night has huge significance, it’s very much a uniquely Cork thing.
“People value their green spaces and parks, and bonfires leave an impact on these areas, which may take months to recover, so you’re essentially removing an amenity from the community. This way you can have the celebration, it’s just the fire element has been taken out of it.”
The events, organised by Cork City Council, will take place at the Nu Farm Green Space in Knocknaheeny from 4pm to 6.30pm; Loughmahon Park in Mahon from 4.30pm to 6.30pm; Clashduv Park in Togher from 4.30pm to 6.30pm; Iona Park in Mayfield from 2pm to 4pm; Comeragh Green space in The Glen from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, and Popham’s Park in Farranree from 4pm to 7pm.
Various activities are planned including play workshops, arts and crafts, sports and games, live music and dance performances.
