Crawford hosts series of events

The public is being invited to delve into the Crawford Art Gallery’s redevelopment, learn about the art of conservation, or take a tour of the latest exhibition as part of the gallery’s programme for National Heritage Week.

As part of the week’s celebrations, which take place from August 17-24, gallery director Mary McCarthy will outline the once-in-a-lifetime heritage project that is Crawford’s capital redevelopment with a talk titled ‘Shaping the Future of Crawford Art Gallery’.

All the events being held in the gallery are free, but some may be ticketed and require booking.

On Friday, August 16, ‘Caring for the Collection’ with Dr Chiara Chillè will explore the importance of art conservation as a vital tool in preserving cultural heritage.

Ms Chillè will inform people of the general principles of conservation followed by a more detailed look at her work with Crawford Art Gallery’s collection.

A Heritage Open Day ‘From Source To Sea’ tour will take place on Saturday, August 17, exploring the exhibition and how it links to the National Heritage Week themes of connections, routes and networks.

A family-friendly workshop with artist Queenie O’Sullivan will also take place on August 17.

‘Crating the Collection’ with registrar Jean O’Donovan will explore her preparations for packing and moving Crawford Art Gallery’s diverse collection of artworks and objects ahead of the gallery’s redevelopment project. The event takes place on Monday, August 19.

‘Decanting the Collection’ with production manager Kathryn Coughlan on Wednesday, August 21 will discuss the process and planning for decanting Crawford Art Gallery’s extensive collection.

A ‘From Source To Sea’ curator’s tour will take place on Thursday, August 22, where curator Michael Waldron will guide visitors on a journey along the course of the River Lee from the comfort of the gallery.

‘Shaping the future of Crawford Art Gallery’ with Mary McCarthy will be the final event at the gallery marking National Heritage Week, on Friday, August 23.

Director Mary McCarthy will inform people about the gallery’s new capital redevelopment, giving attendees an opportunity to hear about the 300-year-old building’s restoration.
