A Cork hospital has announced the opening of a heart-and-lung centre.
It will be the first of its kind in a private setting in Munster.
The new centre, at the Bon Secours Hospital, will offer a full range of cardiac and thoracic surgeries, from complex heart and lung surgeries, to pioneering treatments for respiratory ailments.
This includes treatment and surgery for coronary artery disease, congenital heart defects, heart-valve disease, and heart failure.
Treatments will be delivered under the clinical leadership of Kishore Doddakula, consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, and will be covered by VHI, Laya, and Irish Life insurance.
The hospital has said that patients and their families can now access expert treatment for a wide range of conditions, with the innovative facilities and services at BonSecours Hospital Cork setting a “new standard for exceptional patient care”.
Mr Doddakula said: “Our cardiothoracic programme at Bon Secours Hospital Cork will provide patients in the Munster region with timely, high-quality surgery, featuring the only world-class keyhole technique in Munster.”
Business manager at Bon Secours Hospital Cork, Nollaig Crowley, said: “With this new service, we are delighted to offer our patients comprehensive cardiac care, expanding our range of services from specialised care in our CathLab, to now providing cutting-edge surgical care.”
Bishopstown-based GP at Rahona House, Dr Colman Twomey, said: “This new heart-and-lung unit will be a great addition to the excellent cardiology services already provided at Bon Secours Hospital Cork.”
The Bon Secours Hospital in Cork was established in 1915, and caters to approximately 35,000 patients annually.
The facility, on College Road, boasts more than 300 beds, and employs 1,200 staff, as well as 90 consultants, providing an extensive range of medical and surgical specialties for adults and children.
