More than 8,000 Cork students were among the almost 73,000 pupils nationwide to receive their Junior Certificate results today.
The State Examinations Commission (SEC) released the markings to the highest amount of participants ever, with a total of 645,878 grades issued across 22 individual subjects, marking the third full year of examinations in the reformed junior cycle.
The overall number of students sitting the examination this year increased by 3% on last year, with the proportion of candidates who were re-entrants to education having decreased by 0.4%.
This year saw all subjects examined at common level, except for English, Irish, and mathematics, which were examined at both higher and ordinary level.
Proud
Speaking to The Echo, Nicola Barrett, principal of Le Chéile Secondary School in Ballincollig, said: “They did really well, we’re so proud of them.
“Le Chéile Secondary School opened its doors in September of 2021 with just 17 students — now the first-ever cohort of students, 27 of them, have received their junior cycle results. It’s a fantastic day for the whole school, students, teachers, and parents.
“Many parents of this cohort took a leap of faith in choosing a brand new school for their child’s secondary education, but we are very glad that the student’s results have proven that it was the right decision.”
Ms Barrett further said that she is particularly happy with the student’s results in the area of STEM, with students examined in higher level maths, science, and graphics achieving “well above” the average.
“We are very proud of each and every one of our students, and I am extremely grateful for the immense work and preparation all of our staff put into providing the very best education for our students.”
Thrilled
Richel Long, principal of Christ King Girls’ Secondary School, said: “We are thrilled — our students have demonstrated remarkable dedication, talent, and hard work.
“A special congratulations goes to our top student, Ciara O’Driscoll, who earned an incredible nine distinctions. This student has set a new benchmark of academic success, and we are incredibly proud of her accomplishments.
“We are equally proud of our top 10 students, who collectively achieved an impressive 65 distinctions — this extraordinary group has shown not only academic brilliance but also resilience and perseverance.
“We look forward to watching these young girls continue to excel as they progress in their educational journeys.”
Education Minister Norma Foley praised students in a video shared on social media, describing the occasion as “a fantastic achievement”.
“Huge congratulations to the junior cycle students who are today receiving their results,” said Ms Foley.
“Well done on your achievement, your first State exam. Particular thanks also to the staff who worked with you every step of the way and to your families who ed you on your journey.”
