Latest:

Centre Park Road and Monahan Road have now been fully re-opened.

In a statement, Cork City Council said:

"Operational works are ongoing at Atlantic Pond wastewater pumping station.

"Uisce Éireann crews, ed by Cork City Council and specialist operators, have been on the ground since last night to resolve the issues at the Atlantic Pond wastewater pumping station following equipment failure.

"Cork City Council is liaising with Uisce Éireann's incident management team and the EPA.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation, however as of now no further road closures are planned."

Meanwhile in a statement this evening, a spokesperson for the EPA confirmed that Uisce Éireann yesterday notified the agency of an incident "resulting from a significant equipment failure at the Atlantic Pond wastewater pumping station".

"The incident caused the sewer network to backup, which resulted in localised flooding of wastewater in the Monaghan Road and Centre Park Road area.

"To minimise the potential for wastewater flooding in these areas, Uisce Éireann turned off three pumping stations in Cork city. This gave rise to overflows of wastewater to the River Lee from these pumping stations.

"The EPA has inspected the site today.

"Uisce Éireann is actively working to resolve the issue at the Atlantic Pond Wastewater Pumping Station and has taken immediate actions to restore the pumping of wastewater through the network to the wastewater treatment plant.

"This has ceased the overflow from the three pumping stations in Cork city. Further significant works will be required at the Atlantic Pond wastewater pumping station to restore it to normal operations.

"The EPA has requested Uisce Éireann to sample the River Lee to establish the extent of the impact.

"The EPA will continue to investigate this matter and the site inspection report will be available on the EPA website in due course."
