World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) took place earlier this month, and special guest the Easter Bunny wasn’t the only thing seen hopping in the Down Syndrome Cork Field of Dreams.
Some 27 of the students at the Curraheen facility hosted dozens of visitors on a busy day when people who have Down syndrome take centre stage.
Aoife Lovett, from Fountainstown, said it was a special day and it was great to see so many in attendance.
“We are celebrating all Down syndrome people, because it’s important to us,” Ms Lovett said.
The date for WDSD is set on the 21st day of the third month as a representation of the extra copy of the triplication of the 21st chromosome that people with Down syndrome are born with.
Emer Dineen, from Ballincollig, wore odd socks, which are used to symbolise WDSD because under a microscope, that extra chromosome is said to resemble socks.
“We are celebrating World Down Syndrome Day and wearing odd socks,” Ms Dineen said.
Seán McMahon, from Waterfall, said the day was all about odd socks and celebrating people with Down syndrome, and he offered some advice for life. “Be brave and you can do it, trust yourself; patience and help us to be our best,” Mr McMahon said.
