New extension set to open this week at North Cork community hospital

The HSE has confirmed that residents will begin moving into the new extension of the Millstreet Community Hospital this week.

The extension, which was granted conditional planning permission from Cork County Council in 2019, incorporates 11 single en-suite bedrooms, as well as a new dining room and sitting room.

The move is part of a programme of extension and refurbishment at the hospital, works that are taking place across two phases.

Phase two will commence once residents have been moved into the new accommodation and will see the refurbishment of the old building.

Excited

Acting director of nursing at Millstreet Community Hospital, Ger Murphy, said that residents at the facility are excited to be moving into their new rooms.

“This week will be an exciting week at Millstreet Community Hospital, as we some of our residents to move into their new accommodation,” said Mr Murphy.

“Residents are looking forward to the move, and the team here are delighted to welcome them to rooms which offer more privacy and a better standard of accommodation.

“Our overriding aim is to achieve and sustain a high-quality care environment at Millstreet Community Hospital that cares for, s, and values residents in a safe and comfortable environment.

“These new rooms will help our dedicated team in this aim.”

Privacy

HSE South West head of older persons services, Jackie Daly, said the new extension will provide for increased privacy and independence for the facility’s clients.

“We thank everyone involved in the project to date, including the residents and staff who have patiently waited for this phase of the development to be ready for occupation,” said Ms Daly.

“We are delighted to be in a position to move away from shared, open wards to single rooms, which offer more privacy and en-suite bathrooms.”
