Cork Draghunting: Wolfe Tone Lady wins Sonny Cummins Senior Memorial Draghunt at Ballineen

Pat O'Mahony and Olivia Herlihy with Hannah Bawn of Kerry Pike/Fair Hill Harriers winner of the Sonny Cummins Senior Maiden memorial draghunt at Ballineen.
Consistency was rewarded at Ballineen on Sunday when the Martin Wall trained Northern Hunt hound Wolfe Tone Lady won the Sonny Cummins Senior memorial draghunt.
The west Cork terrain is always good open running, and the hounds made a good job in driving the hunt.
When the hounds showed on the finish the winner looked to have a slender lead but it was evident the chasing pace were well in contention.
When the trainers put the call up Wolfe Tone Lady moved up a gear and on crossed the tape a three- length winner from the eventual runner up Knock’s Lad trained by Ger McCarthy of the Griffin United club.
Knock’s Lad the reigning winner of last year’s Senior All Ireland draghunt is a class hound and this could be a warning to fellow competitors what to expect in the coming months.
Clogheen trainers Gary and Nicola Freyne will be pleased with the display given by last year’s Puppy champion Not Now May who ran a cracking race to snatch third ticket.
After the draghunt the winning trainer Martin Wall praised his hound’s performance.

“I suppose we have been hitting the post in recent weeks so it’s great to get a win under our belts so early in the season,” Wall said.
In the Senior Maiden draghunt another clinical front running display from Hannah Bawn saw her close out her second win of the season.
Trained by the popular Kerry Pike/Fair Hill Harriers ace Pat O’Mahony the winner crossed the tape ahead of Gerry Murphy’s Shanakiel Harriers ace Misty.
Martina and Don McGrath will be pleased with the run of Buccaneer who took a credible third ticket.
The Puppy draghunt took place at the same venue and the winner Slievemish Duchess of Clogheen spoiled a Shanakiel Harriers a clean sweep when crossing the tape ahead of Gerry Murphy trained Mexican Jet with The Dreamer filling third ticket for Thomas and Chloe Murphy.
Credit to the host club they provided good open running for the hounds and reports from the various vantage points suggested it was a competitive race.
It was evident after the draghunt that the winning trainer Damien Wade was elated with his second success of the season.
“I got this pup on the day my late father Mickey went into hospital and I am just sad to think he never recovered to see her run and let’s hope she continues to show plenty of zest on the finish,” Damien said.
