Mayfield Boxing Club are presented with the Victor Aston Cup following another year of success

It was a year of unprecedented success with magnificent magic memories for the Mayfield Boxing Club, gloriously culminating when Mayfield were recently crowned the Cork boxing club of the year.
Amateur boxing in Mayfield is akin to a sporting religion.
It would appear to operate twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
The primary purpose of the club is to provide a good healthy sporting environment for all club .
The club caters for all age groups who wish to train and participate in male and female boxing categories.
Its philosophy is simple, where the club aspires to producing champion boxers.
Every athlete who s the club is given to understand clearly that the club has rules based on standards of respect, commitment and loyalty to a club whose coaches are investing many hours over days, weeks, months and years in the development of their athletes.
This is the hallmark foundation on which the Mayfield Boxing Club is built.

They have earned the respect of the community in Mayfield, and through the success of their boxers over many years are widely acknowledged as great sporting ambassadors for the immediate locality and its environs.
For any club to operate successfully it must have a good base and committee to istrate the affairs of the club, both inside and outside of the ring, and Mayfield BC have an outstanding group of sporting volunteers who are a credit to amateur boxing.
Over recent years, the Mayfield Boxing Club has been served by six very dedicated officials who have laid a platform for their boxers to achieve success and to take a pride in their own ability.
Brian Cronin, Garrett Fitzgerald, Odibo Albologa, Peter Higgins, Jessy Fleming and Jimmy Stanton are all achievers in their own right and impart the benefits of their vast knowledge of both boxing and the fundamentals of good sporting behaviour to the boxers who represent the Mayfield BC.
In the last three years, Mayfield BC has made a huge impact in the world of competitive boxing.
The club has produced many county champions, Munster champions, national champions and double All-Ireland champions.
Their boxers have represented Ireland at international level, and as recent as last February, Donna McCarthy was selected as an Echo Women in Sport Award monthly winner.
She will now go on to contest the overall supreme EWIS supreme athlete of the year award. This will take place next February and Donna will proudly fly the flag for the Mayfield club and Cork ladies boxing.
The last twelve months has seen the club organise a first class tournament, which took place in the complex of the Mayfield Community School. This event enjoyed a very high standard of well-matched competitive boxing, and sportsmanship.
The club paid attention to every detail and they were sportingly assisted by the local soccer club, who provided their to act as marshals and carpark attendants outside the venue.
Inside the ring, the club won the inaugural Mannix Shield, which is presented to the most successful club at the county championships.
Mayfield shared the title with Charleville BC also the previous year.
Following their roller coaster success at county level the Mayfield boxers went on to blitz the Munster campaign before leaving an indelible mark on the national championships where in one day of competition alone, Mayfield boxers won six All-Ireland titles.
This was a famous day for Cork boxing in Dublin when the red tide swept all before them and took a record breaking seventeen national titles in the same day.
This was the day the world of Irish boxing came to appreciate the strength of Cork boxing within all the Leeside clubs.
The Mayfield club has been a credit to the sport in all their affairs of competition and istration and have been acknowledged accordingly during the presentation of the Victor J. Aston Cup, which is the much sought after silver symbol of club success in the southern capital.

This cup is named after a man who gave trojan service to the promotion of boxing, both in Cork and Munster.
A former president of the Cork County Board and one who led by example and always aspired to the highest sporting standards.
On Monday night of last week, the cup was presented to head coach Brian Cronin by Dan O’Connell, the sponsor.
This was also the second occasion for Mayfield BC, as they won it eight years ago in 2017.
For many years, O’Connell worked beside Victor Aston in the Cork County Board and when given the opportunity to perpetuate the name of his late colleague and friend Dan was delighted to avail of that opportunity.
Mr O’Connell congratulated the club on their achievements, and encouraged them to maintain their high standards at all times.
The president of the Cork County Boxing Board Michael O’Brien congratulated the club on their success.
He thanked the Mayfield East Community Association for providing the hall and facilities where the club trains, and he encouraged the club coaches to bring the Victor J. Aston Cup and share their success with all of their sponsors and the general community.
