Mogeely FC are through to the Corinthians Cup final after this victory over Churchvilla at Mogeely.

The tie started lively, but it became obvious very quickly that both sets of players were edgy as frantic clearances and inaccurate ing of the ball meant that the game huffed and puffed until the first chance arrived. That fell for Churchvilla as Dylan O’Mahoney combined with Ryan Forde, but from the edge of the box, he failed to get his foot properly through the ball, enough to get a shot away with any kind of conviction.

Mogeely’s Ryan Sexton did well to get away from his marker down the right flank, but touch left him down when he tried to pick out the lurking Ruairi Murphy near the edge of the box.

And when Sam McSweeney found Ryan Forde in a good position, his effort on goal never really bothered Wimpenny too much.

After a decent effort from Luke Hourigan sailed narrowly over, Mogeely’s defence toiled to clear from a throw and when it came for Daire McCarthy, he fired straight at Ewan Wimpenny.

Minutes later, Sean Hayes got a second bite of the cherry when Sam McSweeney’s free came back off the wall to reach him, but his effort went straight at Wimpenny.

Churchvilla were making a stronger impression on the tie at this stage then the hosts and what a chance fell for them when Ryan Forde found himself in on goal, but he failed to beat Wimpenny in a one-on-one situation.

But, Mogeely always looked threatening when they did work their way into Churchvilla’s final third and when Ryan Sexton crossed into the box, Sean Motherway failed to secure possession of the ball and Kelvin Cody Byrne was on hand to force the ball home on the stroke of half-time to hand Mogeely a 1-0 advantage at the break.

The second half got going with a swerving cross from Ruairi Murphy that deceived everyone as it flew narrowly past the far post.

Another delivery from Murphy was destined for the unmarked Kelvin Cody Byrne, but a sharp intervention by Sean Hayes saved the day.

Ruairi Murphy was on hand again minutes later when from a clearance, he drilled goalwards – only to see Sean Motherway tip out for a corner.

It was all square again soon after – Ryan Forde broke through and forced Ewan Wimpenny to parry from his effort and when the rebound reached Sam McSweeney, he steered home to make it honours even once again.

The scene was now set for both sides to go for the win.

At one end, Sam McSweeney controlled before turning to strike a low effort straight at Wimpenny and when play shifted to the other end, Kelvin Cody Byrne crossed accurately for Billy Foley McGann, who could not keep his effort down from outside the box.

A Mogeely corner followed after that which really proved to be a turning point in the game and when Churchvilla’s defence laboured too much with trying to clear their lines, an opportunity fell for Adam McAuliffe, who struck low and hard into the Villa net to hand Mogeely their earlier advantage back again on 85 minutes.

Then, as Churchvilla frantically chased the equaliser, Billy Foley McGann spotted Sean Motherway out of position and steered his effort into an unprotected target to make it finally 3-1 to Mogeely in injury time.
