Erin’s Own and Midleton remain in the box seats in Division 2 of the RedFM Hurling League following wins at the weekend against Ballymartle and Valley Rovers respectively.
The two premier senior clubs went into the third-last set of fixtures level on ten points, two ahead of Killeagh with Newtownshandrum two points further back, and victories for all four means that the front-runners have promotion within touching distance.
On Saturday, Erin’s Own won by 2-16 to 2-14 at home to their Riverstick opponents, with Conor Lenihan scoring 1-6 for the Caherlag side while Peter O’Shea contributed five points. The other goal was scored by Shane Irwin, while Brian Corry and Cillian Lordan netted for Ballymartle, who had Ryan Deasy chipping in with four points.
That result came after Midleton had secured the points at home to Valleys on Thursday night, with 2-19 to 0-16 the final score at Clonmult Memorial Park.
Cormac Beausang was in excellent form for the Magpies, landing 11 points, six from play, while the green flags came from Luke O’Farrell and Alex Quirke.

Killeagh kept the pressure up with a 3-23 to 2-11 triumph over Éire Óg. Two of the goals for the winners, along with a point, came from Dara Motherway while Colm Leahy for 1-3 with Seán Walsh and Ryan McCarthy scoring five and four points respectively.
While Killeagh still have a chance of finishing in the top two – especially as their last match is away to Midleton – Newtown’s prospects are slim, despite their impressive 3-19 to 1-16 win at home to Ballincollig.
In addition to winning their last two matches, the North Cork side must hope that Killeagh drop points and that one of the two leaders fails to pick up another point.
Eoin O’Mahony got two of the goals as they got the job done on Saturday, with Robert Troy getting 1-2 while Turlough O’Neill had six points and Jamie Coughlan five.
Brian Keating had six of Ballincollig’s points with Mark Oldham weighing with 1-2.
At the lower end of the table, Na Piarsaigh edged closer to safety with a 1-17 to 0-14 win over Fermoy, allowing them to move three points clear of their opponents, who, like Éire Óg, are on two.
Daire Connery had the Piarsaigh goal, with much of the point-scoring output coming from Craig Hanafin and Kevin Moynihan.
