There are four crucial games taking place this evening in the McCarthy Insurance Group Football League.

Two of the fixtures come from Division 1 with everything still to play for in what is the penultimate round of fixtures of the league campaign.

There is a fascinating battle to see who finishes in the top two and therefore a league final place in the top-tier. Heading into Round 8, there are three teams all locked on 12 points, Clonakilty, Nemo Rangers and St Finbarr’s. If there is a three-way tie at the end, it comes down to scoring difference.

The two games from Division 1 this evening are city derbies just to add to the contest.

St Michael’s host St Finbarr’s in Mahon from 7.30pm with the home side now knowing it’s do-or-die time in their pursuit of avoiding the drop. After winning the first game against last year’s league winners Carrigaline, Pat Doyle’s charges have lost six on the bounce.

They are in the relegation zone with Carrigaline on two points apiece and also two points off safety with the two teams above them level on four points in the shape of Éire Óg and Castlehaven.

The other game takes place in Douglas as the Paudie Kissane-coached Douglas outfit entertain Nemo Rangers (7.30pm).

Douglas’ run of three games without a defeat came to an end in the last round when St Finbarr’s won by six points in Togher, but it was an encouraging performance from Douglas. It was on a day when they came up against a Steven Sherlock masterclass. He scored 0-12 (4 2pt, 0-1 f, 0-1 45) in a 0-16 to 1-7 win.

Nemo Rangers will be keen to keep their recent good form going in their aim of making another league final.

Moving down to Division 6 and it’s another all-city clash and a massive one between Na Piarsaigh and Mayfield, which is down for decision in Na Piarsaigh with throw-in at 7pm.

Mayfield are in the drop zone alongside St Michael’s second team with both on two points with Na Piarsaigh a point above them.

Finally, from Division 7, Argideen Rangers will be hot favourites to overcome Nemo Rangers’ third string in Trabeg later on from 7.30pm.

If the West Cork side were to do that, they will be promoted. A draw will also be sufficient.

For Nemo, they are positioned just below mid-table with seven points, three clear of the relegation area.
