Oscars 2025: Will Emilia Pérez be the big winner this year?

Karla Sofía Gascón in Emilia Pérez, which won 13 Oscar nominations

After some giddy successes at the Oscars in recent years - Corkman Cillian Murphy picking up a Best Actor gong last year being a high point - the 2025 event sadly won’t experience a ‘green wave’.

However, there is bound to still be plenty of interest in the red carpet glamour, the styles, and the winners and losers when the event takes place tomorrow.

You can see it all unfold at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood live in The 97th Academy Awards on RTÉ1 from midnight, hosted by Conan O’Brien.

Irish interest is limited this year, after the Belfast Irish language rap film Kneecap failed to land an expected nomination in the Best International film category.

However, Irish production company Tailored Films will be keeping a close eye on the nominations for Donald Trump film The Apprentice, which it was involved in bringing to the screen.

(Incidentally, will any of the winners reference Trump and his recent ravings in their speeches?!)

Also, Nick Emerson, of Belfast, is nominated for best editing for Conclave.

The night may well belong to Emilia Pérez, a musical about a trans Mexican gangster, which won 13 nominations - the most ever by a film not in the English language. The overall record is 14, tied between All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land.

The star of Emilia Pérez, Karla Sofía Gascón, also made history by becoming the first trans actor to be nominated in the acting categories.

Elsewhere, Wicked and The Brutalist got 10 nominations each, and both are up for Best Picture. The Substance also picked up a best picture nomination, and Coralie Fargeat became just the ninth woman to be nominated for best director in the 97-year history of the Oscars.
