Mr Bailey died on January 21 and, at the council meeting the following day, Marcia D'Alton, an Independent in the Carrigaline Municipal District, said she thought it ‘appropriate’ that the chamber would ‘remark on the ing of Ian Bailey’.

Pierre-Louis Baudey-Vignaud, the son of French woman Sophie Toscan du Plantier, was speaking on RTÉ’s the Late Late Show when he said he felt free again in Ireland following the death of Ian Bailey

"I suppose there’s a possibility, like with anything else in life, but with the age of time it is very hard to see that somebody will be identified and prosecuted," Frank Buttimer said.

It is the normal procedure at Cork Council meetings for councillors to suggest names to be added to a vote of condolence which is routinely not actually voted upon.

Ian Bailey has always vehemently denied any involvement in Ms Toscan du Plantier’s death.

Following the death of Ian Bailey yesterday Jean-Pierre Gazeau said: “May he rest in peace. For Sophie's family, friends, and the French justice system, he was regarded as guilty in connection with Sophie’s murder"

Mr Bailey was present in Skibbereen courthouse in West Cork today for the hearing of the case with written submissions to be made before the appeal can be finalised.
