Former Waterford city and county mayor elected to Seanad Éireann

Independent Waterford Councillor Joe Conway has been elected to the Cultural and Educational in Seanad Éireann following a recount that took place earlier on Friday morning.

Cllr Conway's votes sured those of the outgoing Fianna Fáil Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee.

The original result was affirmed following a recount requested by Clifford-Lee. Cllr Conway continued to have fifth highest number of preferences after Clifford-Lee’s votes were distributed. He was elected on the 19th Count.

Speaking on Friday, Cllr Conway said: “I want to thank everyone who ed me in my campaign. All my constituents, family and friends.”

Independent Senator Victor Boyhan congratulated Cllr Conway following the result, saying: “This is a great day for independents. I have known Joe Conway for a very long time.

"He will be an independent voice and independent choice for all those who voted for him on the Cultural and Educational .”

Cllr Conway served as the Mayor of Waterford city and county in 2023/2024. He represents the local electoral area of Tramore and Waterford City West and is a native of Ardagh, Co Longford.

He is a Gaeilgeoir and lifelong educator and former member of Údarás na Gaeltachta, who also nominated him to contest the election. Before entering politics he was a school principal Killea BNS Dunmore East.
