More than 540 itted patients were waiting for beds in Irish hospitals on Wednesday morning, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO).

Some 357 patients were waiting in the emergency departments, while 184 are in wards elsewhere in hospitals.

The hospital with the highest number of patients on trolleys was University Hospital Limerick (UHL), with 103 people waiting for a bed.

UHL had 49 people waiting in the emergency department, with 54 elsewhere in the hospital.

52 people were waiting for a bed in Letterkenny University Hospital, with 18 in the emergency department.

At both Cork and Mayo University Hospitals, there were 40 people at each hospital waiting for a bed.
