Irish domestic football makes its return this weekend as the League of Ireland comes back for the 2023 season.

Reigning champions Shamrock Rovers are aiming for their fourth straight title after last season's success, and will be favourites once again.

However, Stephen Bradley's side will face challenges from several sides, and will have an eye on embarking on an improvement in Europe.

After winning the FAI Cup and a second place finish last season, Derry City will believe they will once again be the biggest threat to Shamrock Rovers dominance, and already have a win over Shamrock Rovers in the Presidents' Cup.

St Patrick's Athletic will feel they are also in a position to challenge, with a solid defence and busy transfer window, they will hope to build on last season's fourth place finish.

Elsewhere, Damien Duff will begin his second full season with Shelbourne after reaching the FAI Cup, while lots of movement in the transfer market should make for some interesting viewing for Bohemians and Sligo Rovers fans.

Here are the opening fixtures to kick off the 2023 League of Ireland season:

Friday 17th February

Cork City v Bohemians, Turner's Cross, RTÉ Two, 7.45.

Dundalk v UCD, Oriel Park, 7.45.

Shelbourne v Drogheda United, Tolka Park, 7.45.

St Patrick's Athletic v Derry City, Richmond Park, 7.45.

Saturday 18th February

Sligo Rovers v Shamrock Rovers, the Showgrounds, 7.45.
