Wee Daniel and Queen of Samba hit Cork stages

What's on Cork's stages this week? Jo Kerrigan tells us in her weekly column, Theatre Nights
Wee Daniel and Queen of Samba hit Cork stages

Alcione, the Queen of Samba, is at the Opera House on Sunday

Not a seat is available in the Opera House for Daniel O’Donnell tomorrow and Saturday night, but it might be worth trying for returns - you never know your luck.

On Sunday night, Alcione, the acknowledged Queen of Samba, makes her Opera House debut as she celebrates 50 anos! Don’t miss this chance to see a legend perform her greatest hits and more.

Note that there may be strobe lighting, smoke and haze among the special effects, and since it contains themes of an adult nature, it is recommended for 18+.

From Wednesday to Sunday next week it’s the welcome return of the Cork Podcast Festival, with Chris Kent, The Rebel Army, Left on Read, and Young Hot Guys all doing their thing this week, and even more on offer next week.

In between, Gilbert O’Sullivan’s show is also completely sold out. That’s what fame does for you!

Call 021 427 0022 or see www.corkoperahouse.ie for all bookings.

Gatman is back at Everyman from tonight until Saturday. Written and performed by Tadhg Hickey and directed by Sophie Motley, this great depiction of a down-and-out Corkman who yearns to be a superhero is gripping to watch. Themes of addiction, abuse, and trauma by the way.

On Sunday, Ireland’s most successful poor comedian Julie Jay (she said it, not us!) is back with her brand-new stand-up show Julie, Madly, Deeply. Riotous fun.

On Thursday next week, September 5, Theatre Lovett presents The Maestro and the Mosquita, a new work by Carmel Winters. This timeless musical comedy has a full original score by Academy Award winner Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare In Love, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin).

Call 021 450 1673 or see www.everymancork.com for all Everyman shows.

Oh, and advance notice of a treat for Noel Coward fans at Everyman - his wonderful Present Laughter is coming on September 24-28, directed by Mary Curtin for Ian McGuirk Productions.

An All-Cork cast handling the Master’s witty lines with ease.

Mary Kate O’ Flanagan is in lively form at the Cork Arts Theatre until Saturday, demonstrating her gift for storytelling as she shares the most ridiculous, hilarious and tragic episodes of her life.

Making A Show Of Myself entertains while inviting its audience to consider how they would tell their own stories. 1pm today and tomorrow, 8pm tonight until Saturday.

Now, a reminder for anyone living within reach of Mallow: the Open Call Auditions for Mala Gala: The Musical will take place at CDYS Small Gym, New Road, Mallow on Monday and Tuesday next, between 7 and 9pm.

Mallow Musical Society is a new group of local talents who want to get together, have fun, and create exciting experiences on stage.

“We aren’t professionals, just a bunch of like-minded people who love musical theatre,” explains marketing officer, Suzanne Wallace.

“Our group includes people of all skill levels. The only requirement to us is enthusiasm! Follow us on Facebook or email [email protected] for more information.”

Something interesting is coming up at Ballymaloe Grainstore in Shanagarry on Saturday, September 7, when the Minaun Community Theatre Group presents A Medical Woman - The Life And Times Of Dr Mary Strangman.

This extraordinary Quaker [1872-1943] was one of Ireland’s first medical doctors; an early lecturer in the field of alcohol and drug addiction; a pioneering suffragette; and, in 1912, Waterford’s first female city councillor. Yet she is largely unknown to the Irish public. The setting for this play is apposite, as Mary’s relatives farmed the land on which Ballymaloe Cookery School is located.

Minaun Community Theatre Group spent a year researching this play, and earlier performances in Waterford were sold out. Only one show at Ballymaloe. See www.ballymaloegrainstore.com.
