An Bord Pleanála rejected the planning application made by Tiznow Property Company Limited.

The application, submitted to the local authority last week by Diamond Developments Ltd, is seeking to develop 72 residential units

An Bord Pleanála upheld last year’s decision by Cork City Council to grant planning permission to development firm Lyonshall for the construction of 90 residential units on a 0.63-hectare site on Skehard Rd.

Plans submitted by Marshall Yards Development Company Ltd for a large-scale residential development of 93 homes, made up of a mix of two-, three-, and four-bed units, as well as a creche with capacity for 68 children, have been granted by Cork County Council.

Leeside Leisure Centre Ltd is seeking planning permission for the development at the site of the former Stables Bar on 1 Oliver Plunkett St, Cloghmacsimon, Bandon.

The planned development will comprise of 469 residential units, consisting of a selection of detached and semi-detached homes, townhouses, bungalows, and apartments, as well as a 122-space childcare facility and an interpretive centre/cafe.

Chief executive of Cork City Council, Valerie O’Sullivan, said that the regeneration of the docklands will be “transformational” for the city.

There are a total of 957 apartments planned, including 140 studios.

One condition stipulates that, in the interest of residential amenity, noise during site clearance and construction shall not exceed 65 decibels, and that working hours during site clearance and construction shall be restricted to between 8am and 6pm on weekdays, and between 8am and 4pm on Saturday.

The application, submitted to Cork City Council this week, seeks permission for the construction of a development consisting of 348 units in Wilton.

The development was subject to a debate at Monday’s council meeting, with several councillors for the area identifying issues with the development.

The 550 homes will include 394 houses - a mixture of two, three and four-bed semi-detached and terraced units - as well as 156 apartment/duplex units, a mixture of one and two bed units in ten blocks ranging in height from two to six storeys.

The report looks at state-owned land, from undeveloped land to sites currently occupied by state bodies, such as the Central Statistics Office (CSO) headquarters in Mahon or sites owned by ESB, the Cork Education and Training Board, Cork city and county council and various government departments.

The hotel will range in height from five to 10 storeys above ground level and comprise 180 bed spaces, a gym, reception area, kitchen, and a breakfast/dining area.

Sinn Féin councillor for Cork City South West, Joe Lynch, shared his enthusiasm for the development, which is located near his own home.

The proposed development will comprise six one-bed apartment units and two two-bed townhouse units.

Data from the report, entitled Planning Permissions Quarter 4 and Year 2024, revealed that during the months of October, November and December, there were 6,890 dwelling units granted planning permissions nationwide, down 38.4% from 11,181 units in Q4 of 2023.

Last week, the board went against wishes outlined in an appeal by 10 residents, a previous Cork City Council decision and their own planning inspector’s recommendations by granting permission for a six storey apartment block, this following the council and inspector recommending it be reduced to five, and local residents saying even five storeys would “dominate” the area.

An Bord Pleanála has granted permission for two blocks of five and six storeys with 44 apartments — one studio, nine one-bed, 29 two-bed, and five three-bed — and four four-bed houses.

It is proposed that the development would provide for modifications and upgrade works to the interior and exterior of the restaurant, along with improvements to the drive-thru lane and associated signage.

The plans, submitted last week to Cork County Council by Corajio Unlimited Company, who trade as Mr Price, seek to construct the retailers fifth Cork store along Broad St and Bakers Lane in Charleville.

The R&H Hall buildings will be replaced by a new sustainable landmark building, which occupies the same footprint and makes reference to the industrial characteristics of the silos in its design. 

A plethora of planning applications for developments in Cork city and county have been lodged or decided on over the past couple of months. Reporter Rachel Lysaght takes a look at some of the projects on the horizon.

Kenny Jacobs, CEO of daa, which operates both Cork Airport and Dublin Airport, told The Echo: “The plan is still to demolish the old terminal. I think that will happen in 2026, as part of our wider plan."

Developers Chimera Ltd were granted permission by Cork City Council for developments at 38/39 Washington St.

This refusal means more than 1,300 apartments planned for the current Goulding site in the docklands are delayed indefinitely.

The plans, which had been under review for more than three years, comprised of one studio apartment, 161 one-bedroom units, and 327 two-bedroom units.

The development would include 18 residential units

The application is also seeking to construct a range of amenities to complement the development, including a 35-place creche, a gym, and a retail and cafe unit.

The existing two storey building is a small mid-19th century town house over a public house and a landmark building on the corner of the historic streetscape.

The total was the second lowest monthly total since September 2018 and the lowest figures since September 2022.

Cork City Council is expected to make a decision on the planning application, which is currently at the pre-validation stage, by February 14.

This latest submission differs from the previous plans, which were originally submitted in December 2023

The application, submitted by O’Flynn Construction, proposes the development of 550 homes at a site to the north of Dunkettle House, as part of phase one of a larger project, which aims to see a major 1,036 home development at the site.

The project will add 150MW (300MWh) of fast-acting energy storage to provide grid stability and deliver more renewable power to Ireland’s electricity system.
